I have used RM since it was originally Family Origins. I have never upgraded from RM 7.0.0 because I have been unable to research for several years. How much of a learning curve is there in the newest version? I recently saw a friend’s version and the screen looked entirely different and don’t want to spend months re-learning software. Opinions, please. Thank you!
I very much dislike RM8+. 99% of the reason is the user interface. I still use RM with no plans to switch, however, you need to look at how you use RM. If you need it to interact with Ancestry.com, you will have to upgrade.
There is an Essentials free version of RM11 that you can download and import your file into just to test it out.
Both RM7 and RM11 can coexist on your machine. RM11 may prompt that it wants to remove old version. Don’t let it. When you import your RM7 file, RM11 will create a new file and leave your version 7 file unharmed. Never hurts to make a backup though.
just adding to give perspective that many longer time users of RM7 (and older) Dislike RM8+. I started initially with Rm7 while RM8 Preview was being released – RM7 was somewhat easier from the UI to get used to. I guess it depends on if you do not need any of the newer features if RM7 is enough – many users still user it today. That said many users upgrade with every versions or have upgraded (and skipped some of the in-between versions).
I have Rm7 on my machine but its been awhile since I have used it. I also have FTM 2019 & 2024.
The main reason I user FTM 2024 is for the FBC plug in
My question is: Why do you want to upgrade? What’s your driving need?
You’ve said you haven’t researched in several years. Are you picking back up now. Or maybe you just want to open your existing file, get a print out using a modern report and give it to someone?
Helping understand your motivation to ask for opinions would help inform what kind of answers we can give.
Many users complained about the UI (User Interface) of RM7 and it was around the same time that laptops, tablets, phones and the internet were adopting newer screen layouts. So, the authors redesigned its UI to adapt the same functionality onto differing screens with added window panels and different placements. Take kfunk’s advice and try Essentials
Try RootsMagic Essentials
Thanks for the input! I have no driving need to change versions, so I will stick with ver.7 for the time being and possibly give the newest version of RM Essentials a try.
Right now my main project is culling six file cabinet drawers of paperwork that I’m sure my kids would simply trash when I die! I’m scanning documents that are not readily available on-line and putting the hard copies in family binders. (They know the binders represent 40 plus years of research and are to go to the next family researcher.) The recycle bin is getting a workout!

The “why” is probably what my grandkids call FOMO - fear of missing out. The replies have assured me that I need to stay the course and focus on what I planned and not get side-tracked. Thanks for helping me keep focused! Betty
