Not Expected Results - Media with multiple tags

This does not seem to be working as intended for what RM is showing.

yes there are TWO tags (which is correct)

the results on first screenshot appear to me misleading and not displaying correctly in the persons edit grid (for 2nd person but not first)

RM 12.1.0 64b
Win11

I will add that this seems to be related to only newly added media with multiple tags in RM12 – not previous in Rm11 or prior and I did NOT find any duplicate in db

I can’t seem to recreate this. I will need exact steps on how it was added.

I will do a detailed video .

  • add Fact to person 1
  • Add media via drag n drop to first person on that fact
  • Add fact to person 2
  • Add media via drag n drop to 2nd person on that fact

I tried db tools and restarting program – results were found on two set of people added today. Headstone had both names – this is the same way I have done the process for last 4 plus years (v8 to v11). Did random sample of people done prior to rm12 – no issue found. It almost a ghost tag but database appears fine

Looking at your process, I would think you would end up with 2 of the same media.

I add the fact to person 1 with media tagged and source, then Copy the fact to others.

I make any changes to source &/or media for 2nd person if needed.

nope / nadahh – I have done this process for 4 years and the 2nd person has a ghost.
my first thought display is showing an orphan record not a real record but the database dose not indicate that -so it seem like when multiple tags its showing wrong on the other people.
Sometime in earlier RM8 I learned that the only way to ensure no duplicate issues with media was to only use DRAG n Drop - and the only time I have ended up with duplicate filenames . > 1 media ID was not doing so. This is new for RM 12. I have run tools and that does not clean them up. Also since the DB Tool for orphans is very NON aggressive – it leave many orphans in many cases but that seems to be by design.

@rzamor1 here is video
RM12 MediaAttachBug 101726.mp4

I will add that @thejerrybryan has spoken about using the drag n drop method before and there have been many discussion about it. I think I was one of the first persons who brought up topics about it going back to very early RM8

Here is other info @rzamor1

above show no duplicate media with same name (in this case couple)

in this case Edna is Person #1

Husband is Pers#2 with “ghost”

the tags only show once for each

on pers#2

UPDATE
the issue may be coming from where MEDIAID is Zero
this is same OwnerID from one of above

here is a script that can help find them or ones that might be impacted

SELECT DISTINCT
n.OwnerID,
n.Surname,
n.Given,
n.BirthYear,
n.DeathYear,
m.MediaID,
m.MediaFile,
m.UTCModDate
FROM EventTable e
JOIN MediaLinkTable ml ON e.EventID = ml.OwnerID AND ml.OwnerType = 2
JOIN MultimediaTable m ON ml.MediaID = m.MediaID
JOIN NameTable n ON e.OwnerID = n.OwnerID
WHERE e.EventType = 4
-- Adjusted to match RootsMagic's 1899-12-31 epoch float format
AND m.UTCModDate >= (julianday('now', '-7 days') - julianday('1899-12-31'))
AND m.MediaID IN (
SELECT MediaID
FROM MediaLinkTable
GROUP BY MediaID
HAVING COUNT(*) > 1
)
ORDER BY n.Surname COLLATE NOCASE, n.Given COLLATE NOCASE;

When you mention ‘zero’, I take it you mean ‘null’ (those are distinctly different “values” in SQL). Since there are a number of ‘null’ values in that row, is the absence of an OwnerType value the key to finding them? Just curious.

Good callout – I mi-spoke null, 0, empty and blank are different things. depending on context.

The mediaID in MediaLinkTable are ZERO instead of expected values. Basically creating orphans as they are not linked. This bevhaior was not present by RM in previous version – my behavior is same – RM12 is not. Also users should be able to create orphans rows of data or not linked data – its seems because they are being added as same time

The MediaID should NOT be zero
I believe that is why the appear a “phantoms”

I did your D&D Media twice and did not get your problem. Worked as expected.

Do you get this “ghost” when you just tag the 2nd person to it and not drop the media again?

No one else has reported this issue that I’ve seen.

I like to see a video of it not occurring if you are convinced and followed what I did in my video and it did not occur. Let me know if you can do. Normally I am defensive of RM – this is not going to be the case.

I have done more than 1000 of these past 4 years with no issue prior to Rm12, since RM12 I believe all of them had issue. Some of the have even 5 or so tags if / when multiple on headstone.

I did not try the other way to do that by tagging nor should I have to. I normally
Either the the bug should resolved (or worked on being resolved) or the ability to do that should be disabled .

I have spent too much bandwith in troubleshooting your issue while you haven’t tried my option. C YA.

its not MY issue is an RM issue which impact the entire community - yes there are ways for it to NOT occur – every time I use order of operations in RM 12 I demonstrated in video the same “bad” result occurred. I can fix this using SQL most users do not have that “luxury”. I do NOT care if do not want to help me I do not need help – if you do not want to help the community that is on you.

Either ADD Media tag to event nor Add Existing Media produce the BAD result – every time I have added via drag N drop to same fact type to 2nd(or 3rd) person it has occurred.
**And actually if I go back to first person add and drag n drop same media file to original person it will also then have a “ghost”. *

Bottom line is repeatable and not any of the ways ADD MEDIA TAG to EVENT or add Existing media produce the ghost bad result.

EDIT
One other thing if I go back to gallery and remove the original media from gallery the ghosts remain and tools does not remove them either (which is expected by the design of NON Aggressive )

EDIT2

I have tested this a new FRESH db and the same issue/result of ghosts persists - this is 100% RM12 bug and repeatable . Note that the File is coming from subfolder (Headstone) within the main media folder – so I am not sure if the paths have anything to do with it

O:\OneDrive - SNHU\Documents\FAMILY TREE\MEDIA\Headstones

@rzamor1 let me know if anything else is needed

One (1) drag’N’drop operation definitely resulted in two (2) media items:

agreed – started in RM12 all versions

Test in seperate new database of 50 or so people same results.

never found to occur prior to RM12 – the question is why – basically it seem when duplicate its replacing with mediaID zero and leaving there – that behavior was not present in RM11 through RM8

this is what is puzzling – 80%+ users are not having any problems— – this is not helpful to you BUT it does indicate that there MIGHT BE something more problematic about your environment factors or it could be the the way you are moving through the steps-- the environmental might have to do with W11 updates. a 3rd party anti-virus etc --BUT if over 80% of other users do not have issue then its something beyond just RM.

I am not trying to diminish your frustrations but to find the real cause – its likely a combination of factors which is what makes it hard

This is what A I said–note you may have tried some of this-- if so apologize

  1. Run Database Tools

File → Tools → Database Tools

Rebuild Indexes
Check Database Integrity
Check Media Links

If the duplicate disappears after rebuilding indexes, it was likely an indexing/display issue rather than a true bug.

  1. Open Media Album

Find the media item in the Media Album and inspect it there.

Questions:

Is there only one media record?
Does the media record show only two person tags?
Or does it somehow show duplicate tags for the second person?

If the Media Album shows everything correctly but the Person Edit screen shows duplicates, that’s strong evidence of a UI bug.

  1. Create a Tiny Test Database

This is probably the strongest test.

Create a brand-new empty database:

Add Person A.
Add Person B.
Add one photo.
Tag photo to Person A.
Tag same photo to Person B.
View Media tab for each person.

If the duplicate appears again in a brand-new database with only two people and one photo, then he has a reproducible bug that RootsMagic support can easily verify.

  1. Check Whether the Two Entries Are Really the Same

On the second person’s Media panel:

Double-click the first media item.
Double-click the second media item.

See whether they open:

the same Media ID
the same file path
the same captions
the same tag list

If everything is identical, then RM is literally displaying the same media record twice.

  1. Try “Fix Broken Media Links”

Even if links are not broken, I’ve seen odd media behavior clear up after:

File → Tools → Fix Broken Media Links

Not because links are broken, but because it forces RM to refresh portions of its media database.

unverified statement – my process is likely not done by 80% …
ONLY one user claims they did and when I asked them to demonstrate it did they refused / unwilling /unable to do so – no one else has claimed to follow the steps in the video and had it NOT happen so if someone can demonstrate that I need to change where I able looking.

Not bragging but my skill-set is well above average – I was a Blackboard admin so I had to identify resolve issues with Blackboard and integration and work with IT depending. I may not have explained all the details

  • 1 yes did so
  • 2 Media only one item in galleria
  • 3 already stated replicated in new - exactly ( If the duplicate appears again in a brand-new database with only two people and one photo, then he has a reproducible bug that RootsMagic support can easily verify.)
  • 4 nothing duplicated is visible is RM UI
    • MediaID is Zero on the extra tags for RM12

    • I confirmed in my RM11 versions – there was no MediaID zero meaning the displaying was the factor but having media TAGS with MediaID = 0 is the issue

    • 5 – Try “Fix Broken Media Links” good suggestion but note - there was a case in RM10 (if I recall that if moved to a new computer and had a dif path structure/ sub folders – it made cluster mess of your media/database so I would be cautious about using – I sent info to IT and I replicated that issue multiple times and on 2nd database – it was unique scenario on that one – never heard back – I resolved using sql.

Every time I use the method in the video the issue occurs – no time I have use the method in the video have I see it NOT occur (I have been watching since the 2nd time I knew it occurred a few days after 12.0.0 release). No other method I have tried that is not like like steps in video produced the results. This is a clear bug and repeatable - the only thing unique to me is the file location path structure and that the file was newly added to the gallery (Indirectly) via the add media by drag n drop via the fact. What seems to be happening it adds a single “ghost” tag wherever a duplicate with same filename/path is added – but it does not add more than one ghost tag if steps are repeated multiple times

Have you tested if drag n dropping into a new blank database will still cause the same issue? So far I have not been able to reproduce this following the steps and video.

yes I can submit tonight when i get home
Everytime I used drag n drop I get the “ghost” mediaid = 0 – I was going to try a few more scenarios to make sure you get a get good case use.

Doing the NON DRAG N DROP does not seem to have any issues.
