Mismatch between Place Details total column and the actual number of detail entries

I’ve worked extensively recently to update every place in my database with a Lat/long and, where there are place details, a lat/long entry for them too.

I’ve just noticed that for one of my places the details total is 37 but there shouldn’t be any place details for that particular place. Clicking the > arrow to move to the Place Details screen shows correctly that there aren’t any Details entries at all.

Where is the main Places list getting that total of 37 place details entries from when the total should be zero? I’m pretty sure all my other place details totals correctly reflect the true number of detail entries, so I’m puzzled as to why this one place is wrong.

Have you tried running the database tools under File, Tools?

Run DB tools as Renee suggested and restart RM – if result not as expected – include screenshots in thread and someone might notice something

I’ve run Rebuild Indexes and Integrity check twice and restarted RM but nothing changed.

However, I noticed that the Edit Place pane on the right of the Details screen had an entry when it should be blank as there aren’t any place details. I deleted the details in the pane and returned to the main Place list. The erroneous entry was now (mostly) blank but it still showed a total of 37 place details. I deleted that Place entry despite the warning that there were records attached. A quick Ancestry import will solve that.

In actuality there were only 3 person records using that specific place so I don’t know how that showed as 37 place details when I hadn’t entered any at all.

I experienced the same thing when I noticed the number of place details was greater than the number of place details listed. The number of place details was 2 while only showing 1 entry and no blank place detail lines. I did run the Tool-Rebuild Index and Tools-Clean Phantom Records. Those features did not correct the number of place details. I then just created a new duplicate place with the correct place detail and relinked the tag. Then deleted the incorrect Place entry.

We will need a test database with this issue. Open a support ticket and tell us which place to look at.

I’ve rectified the issue but if it should happen again I will open a support ticket.

If you deleted the contents of the fields in the Edit Place Detail form, you emptied the fields of the Place Detail record but the record remained in the database, still linked to the Place and counted as a Place Detail even though nothing showed under the Place Details pane. What you should have done is to use the trash can control atop the Place Details pane to delete the currently highlighted Place Detail. That would delete the Place Detail record and reduce the count and save you all the steps of emptying each field.

What really puzzles me is how you got the Edit Place sub-pane showing when you are in the Place Details main pane. What OS, RM version and bits are you using?

I couldn’t delete the place details using the trash can as there weren’t any place details to delete, other than the erroneous Edit Place pane on the right. The total of 37 was the erroneous part and bore no relation to the actual records attached to the Place (from the main place list).

I have no idea what caused this to happen as I hadn’t even been working on that Place. It leapt out at me from the main listing because the details total was showing as far higher than I knew it to be and I knew that I hadn’t entered any place details for that particular place on any record in the database. However it came about I could only fix it by deleting the fields in the Edit Place pane as there was no other option.
