Merge two files RM 12

I read I could merge two RM databases together. I downloaded 4 individual data files (one for each grandparent) from FamilySearch. I merged two of them into one file but was unable to merge the other two or do any other merging. I’m not seeing anything about doing this in the support files. Is it possible? Are there directions somewhere?

How are you merging? Did you use drag n drop?

I didn’t do a drag and drop of individuals as outlined in the help pages. Unfortunately, I don’t recall what I did. The merging of two followed by the inability to merge the other two happened the same day in June using RM 10. My plan was to have a maternal and a paternal from FamilySearch and compare them with my personal file. I have upgraded to RM 12. Can I drag and drop one whole file into another one?

Yup, it’ll offer up options and ask for your selection.

Thanks. I’ll try that. That may be what I did before.

You can import as many Gedcom files into a new master file as you wish in all software packages.

However no software package will make assumptions of duplicates but will help manually resolve them.

There is a data piece called UID which is not visible, this is a 32bit Unique ID and no two different people should have the same UID. Some software packages will Auto merge on the strength of this Unique data.

However in your case you will need to run Duplicate Search Merge in Rootsmagic and manually select which are and are not matches.

I don’t plan to merge it into my database. It was a way to see what FamilySearch had on a line in one file instead of clicking from person to person.
