I’ve recently been made aware that who I assumed was my grandfather is actually my great grandfather/grandmother. My problem is: how can I insert my grandfather/grandmother between my parents and my great grandparents?
Is it doable on the existing family tree to insert a new entry between existing entries or is it as I fear that a new tree must be started?
A new tree is not required.
Suppose you are John Doe, your father is William Doe, and you have entered your grandfather as Samuel Doe. But suppose you discover that the correct sequence is that you are John Doe, your father is William Doe, your grandfather is Thomas Doe, and your great grandfather is the Samuel Doe who is already in your database.
So add a second father to William Doe named Thomas Doe. William will temporarily have two fathers. Then add Samuel as the father of Thomas. You will be adding the Samuel who is already in your database, not a new Samuel. Finally, unlink William and Samuel from each other as son and father, and you are done.
Getting the linking and unlinking just right can be a little tricky, but that’s the concept of what you need to do.
I would add this:
Add the Child to both Father and Mother at the same time in each case, then unlink William as a Child of the couple Samuel and Mary. That avoids creating a parent couple comprising just the Father and another that is just the Mother and having to sort that out.
I would make it more simple. Unlinkthe child from the grandparents, making sure to write down the record numbers. Then add his parents, and then add the grandparents by chosing the record number you wrote down before unlinking.
