I have not done Genealogy in a long time so am trying to catch up on how to do things! I am wanting to import information from Family Search but I’m not sure how to do it. Can someone detailed instructions? TYIA!
Create A New RootsMagic File
Download From an Online Tree
Select FamilySearch
Give it a Name
log into FamilySearch
You will get a popup window in RM to select what you want to download from FamilySearch
I would have the FSID displayed too … Settings>General>Number To Display
Clarifying if you mean one person at a time or whole family/branch?
Those are different steps
Thank you for your help!
I’d recommend spending some real time reviewing the tree in FamilySearch before you import more than a generation or two. I use it a lot to save time with data entry, but generally bring people over individually because there are WAAAY too many duplicates if you go very far. Cleaning up the mess in RM may take you more time than you saved importing them family by family.
Yes agreed – I rarely import more than one person at a time in RM. I have tested (test db) larger # of people – it most cases I did not see ROI for that initial effort saved.
Thank you! Did you say there is a different way to download an individual vs a family group? What are the steps for both? TYIA!
you can download from starting person using the tool BUT you need to be careful not to create duplicates and limit # of up/down # of generations (as that can exponentially increase size of download and cause it to fail)
So you could that for example 0 Ancestors and 2 Descendants. Then link that family as needed and check for duplicates (work smaller to minimize chance for duplicates ) I really have not experimented doing whole families at a time but I guess in theory it should work.
Be mindful of preexisting family members and/or spouses (event were you might not expect them)
