In RootsMagic, I can attach one or more image to a source, but I cannot attach a source to an image. Unless the intent is to have a unique source for every image, that seems backwards to me. When I add a new image in RootMagic, the ability to select the source of the image when entering the image info would be very helpful.
For example, I received a number of family photos from a distant relative. I’m not going to create individual sources for each photo. I could load all the images at once and attach them to the single source I created, but find that I don’t really need all of the images in RootsMagic; it’s easier to select the ones I need from a folder on my PC. Once I’ve done that, attaching the images to the single source is cumbersome.
One of the benefits of the changes to RootsMagic 8 that I appreciated was multiple ways of performing certain tasks. Attaching sources to images was apparently missed.
Generally Citations / Citationlinks are to support the fact etc,
An image, such as census, Mil Draft, Marr Record, death certificate would be the file that support the citation. There various methods to split how citations are done (lump vs splitting).
I guess you might be either confused on the structure of Source/Citations. I am not likely the best person to explain how this works but there are layers
Layer 1: Identifies the specific record set (“Oklahoma County Marriage Records”) and the source database (“FamilySearch”).
Layer 2: Provides the URL and access date for the online database.
Layer 3: Details the specific image and its location within the database (image 479 of 711).
there are many ways to do this – but ultimately there are layers.
If the source was Grandma Rose – then you might have picture of Rose – but the picture would be attached to the source in that example – the citation might be a store she told someone on March 15 1990 – the details might be a narrative or recording of that story.
No, it wasn’t missed. It simply isn’t a matter of genealogy. If you need sources for your photos, then you should be entering that information into the photo metadata as it is specific to the photo. Depending what, if any, photo management software you use, sources can be doen in different ways. Windows will allow you to right click and enter metadata to be stored with the photo, and I am sure Mac’s have this option also. If you google something like ‘exif’ you can probably find a lot of photo management options.
