Hello, a question, with my tree from monarch’s there are many illegitimate childs, now i do make the illegitimate child as a specific role. but when i want a group make where i can group all the illegitimate child or another role, it is not possible only i can do this when i make this possible as another fact or as i give this text in de description from the birth. is it somehow possible to make a group from a role ?
You can’t make a Group based on Role.
You can create a Group (illegitimate) when you are in the person’s Edit screen and then Add them to it.
You might want to rethink about branding any human being illegitmate. While the term has been used historically, we could do well to stop using it since it casts a negative slant on the person.
If out of wedlock birth is really important to make obvious in a database, this fact can usually be determined from the birth and marriage dates of the mother without further comment.
In any kind of report printout, having this print out probably not advisable. Again, it casts a negative slant on a person over which the person being described has no control. If one really feels a need to designate this status, it might be preferable to attach out of wedlock status to the mother. Personally I would avoid that also, but others might think differently.
Whilst I agree with your sentiment, I can think of a few reasons why it might be useful to some researchers to record births out of wedlock. I’m sure we have lots of them in our trees. I know a fellow researcher who has used DNA to find ‘missing’ fathers for some of her ancestors, at least 2 of whom were heads of households where the mother was a young servant girl. I think we know that this was fairly common in Victorian England but finding this out can usefully fill out the tree. So if that’s an area that is important to a researcher I can see why they may want to create a group. Having said that I agree that there is no shame attached to either the mother or the child involved and that any negative inferences are to be avoided.
mscheffler, I have many females that I don’t know their last names yet so I leave it blank. But I do have a great grandmother that was born back in the 1800’s, she is listed as illegitimate. I see no problem with that as it is what her father is listed as. Even with my DNA chances of ever finding him are slim to none. I don’t think negatively about my great grandmother or her mother, only the guy that most likely raped her. I don’t want to be traveling down the wrong rabbit hole because we do have a step father’s name and thought for years that it was her father. Her mom and step father were married 3 years after her birth.
