Duplicate Media and Ancestry Memories

I know this issue may have been address (which is a frustrating issue) i.e. Duplicate media being sent to Ancestry memories.

My question is a little different. What I’m trying to figure out is what is the best workflow in RootsMagic 11 to limit the duplicates going to Ancestry Memories. I like to working on Ancestry hints in RootsMagic and include adding any source citations from that spot into RootsMagic.

As seems to be the process, Ancestry will download a copy of the record into Roots Magic. I believe when I Treeshare a copy goes to back to Memories as a media file, I want to stop that. This also happen with normal media causing duplicates in Ancestry.

Basically, I want to be able to control which records media etc. gets sent to memories in Ancestry and what is the best workflow in RootsMagic to accomplish that.

Thanks

Rob

The only true way to control media - is not let Ancestry manage it at all.
Download, rename and organize on your filesystem – then link / attach. This may be more work or seem like it – but its really the best way – I learned that coming to RM after letting FTM do that for years with Ancestry. (cryptic names and so on).

Thanks but it seems like a RM thing - I’m just learning about treeshare ( I switched from Family Historian 7). It seems like when I save a photo in RM and use tree share it keeps sending a copy to memories (i.e. then you have dup copies) and I really don’t like that. I want control of my media.

I do not use tree share with media at all – so I can not speak from personal experience. There are users that do. I upload tree to Anc without media so ANC does does nothing. If I were to pull a media record from ANC (say draft records, marr record or census etc ) I download. Everything is my 100% control all right in RM. I do not push any media changes to RM later.
For me – I never have issues being in control - so maybe someone has method that works for two way sharing.

Thanks - it’s very frustrating because the main reason I switch to RM was the treeshare. I do think treeshare is good just some odd circumstances when using it. Thanks for your Input and help!

I am probably in the miniority in the way I use treeshare.
I really only use for hints. I have other ways to share. I need to find a new host but I share info via my website not Ancestry to family etc.
I upload a new tree 2-3 times per year to Anc. (no media).
I download hints/records/media and attach in RM through a manual process.

Kevin - Question when you say you upload a new tree 2-3 times, I ‘m assuming you are just updating a brand-new tree to Ancestry. When you do that doesn’t this process trigger all the hints again new and the ones you had already reviewed? How do you handle that? When I used FH7 - the process you use was the general practice for that software. it worked but it always “re-trigged” the hints. Thanks again for your input it’s very helpful to hear what others are doing so I can figure out the best process for my Family tree!

Thanks

Rob

Hi Kevin. We are a minority of two! I don’t use treeshare at all.

Like you I upload a new GEDCOM to Ancestry every now and then, no media. Delete the old tree and link the new tree to my DNA test. Also, like you I manually download records and add to my RM database

In RM I have disabled all hints, to be honest they are mainly a waste of time

Cheers

Count me with the RM users who do not use Tree Share. I think I tried it once with RM7 and uploaded my entire tree to Ancestry to use with possible hints in the future, marked it private and then have left it alone, likely at least 10 years ago. Figured that someone who found my information in a search marked private and wanted more information, could write to me directly.

I have a 310,000 + database in RM7, almost completely hand entered, developed over a period of about 30 years. When I started with DNA kits on Ancestry I made a much smaller database by gedcom and sent to Ancestry, where I could pair the DNA matches for my family. That database is about 10,000 names about this point. By evaluating DNA matches on Ancestry I have been able to find some significant additions to my genetic lines and discovered some mistakes in some lines that have been carried on in online databases for years..

I currently evaluate new likely DNA matches with this small database, and if I am sure individuals fit into the whole picture, I enter the newly found information into my big RM7 database which I share on Geneanet. I do add likely photos to the small DNA database on Ancestry and save them to my hard disk in case I ever attempt to add media to my large body of work.

I don’t understand why so much dependence on large amounts of shared information from online information without close examination of what is being combined and transferred. Some sharing just seems to multiply errors without advancing new information. I don’t have a solution except to encourage people to vet more carefully what they take from online databases.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts - I’m starting to consider moving in that direction of not using Tree Share (or at least limiting it) in my workflow process….although Tree Share was the main reason I moved from FH7 for RM. Need to see how it goes - I guess it would solve my issue with duplicate pictures in Ancestry Memories Gallery.

When using Treeshare I make sure the media box is unchecked at all times, learned the hard way and still have a lot of clearing up of media duplicates to do.

Thanks I try to make sure it’s unchecked too. For me I think the issue is when it’s a new fact and Tree Share sends the whole thing…there is not box to check

You may want to confer with other users who use it successfully.

I use tree share on a very limited basis and basically only one-way but I really do not maintain changes. after the new tree is uploaded. This works for my purposes at this point and time
