Descendent list to show spouse in final generation

In a descendant list of 3 (say) generations with ‘print spouses’ selected, the individuals in the 3rd generation are listed, but their spouses are not shown. The only way of listing the ‘3rd generation’ spouses is to select 4 generations (which, of course, means that all their children are also listed - which I do not want).

Is there a way round this?

I had to chuckle at this one. For years, I have wanted the same feature, except that I wanted it in Descendant View rather than Descendant List. Either place, it would be very useful. And either way, it would need to be an option because a user might not always want to add spouses without adding the children. Other times, a user might want to add spouses and add children at the same time, which is the way it always works now. Except that right now, there is no option.

Well, saving to a file-type and then editing the file comes to mind.

is there a way to play with groups using AND with BUT NOT to achieve something close?

Kevin

You can select the people with groups by marking descendants and spouses for the desired number of generations. Neither AND nor BUT NOT is even needed. So that’s not the problem. The problem arises when looking at the people in Descendant View or in a Descendant List.

I did a little experiment just now. I’m not going to post screen shots because I did the experiment with living people. But you can do the experiment yourself very easily. Here is the process.

  1. Go far enough back to somebody who has lots of generations of descendants and make a group of his or her descendants for 3 generations, including spouses.
  2. Choose some unused color set, clear all the colors, and color code the descendants of same person for 3 generations, including spouses.
  3. Go to Descendant View set to 3 generations with the same Ancestral person in the primary position. Because of the way Descendant View works with the children’s generation, you will actually see descendants who are of the third generation. But what you won’t see is the spouses of the third generation. That’s what I want to see sometimes but not always, so it needs to be an option.
  4. Here is the whole point of the color coding. Change the number of generations in Descendant View to 4. The color coding now shows exactly who I want to see. You can see the children in the 4th generation, but now they are easier to ignore because they are the only people without the color blocks.

I changed my mind. I changed my group not to including any living people, so here is a useful screen shot. It’s Descendant View for 4 generations with color coding for 3 generations plus spouses. So the color blocks make it easier to see just the people I want to see and to ignore the people I don’t want to see. I just want an option to do this directly in Descendant View without the assistance of the color blocks. And Descendant List needs the same option.

I was sort of thinking more outloud of what another use might do to get around such things. this gave me some ideas for other scenarios.

Thanks for your help, everyone.
You have confirmed that it is working as intended (I thought I might have misunderstood the options). I can live with this.
