I’ve created a custom report based upon Employer. By default, it groups all events by Person – I want to sort all results by date.

You can export the report to a spreadsheet to manipulate it.
In the Custom Report Designer click on Report Options (gears icon) and select the date you wish to sort by.
My second response is that Custom Reports can be sorted by the date of a specific fact type and up to two subsorts. But it cannot primary sort on the dates of multiple fact types which I may have erroneously interpreted as your goal. You could do that in a spreadsheet.
