Creating a source template for a collated local government cemetery registry

I’m after some advice on best practice for sourcing and how to structure a custom template.

In South Australia, specifically, we have a Local Government Authority that covers the individual District Council bodies of the state (ie, similar to individual counties). Each council is its own governing body for that area, and is responsible for the cemeteries within that council, meaning they are the repository and source of the record.

The LGA has a single index that the majority (but not all) of the state’s councils voluntarily link their cemetery databases to. It allows for a name search to either Statewide, Cemeteries in this Council, or you choose a specific cemetery in that council, which means that, in theory, you can find anyone within those registers, regardless of which Council webpage you’re on.

There’s close to 70 councils in all, with approximately 50 participating in the collective scheme.

I would prefer to have a single master source for the LGA councils, which would allow me to specify which council the record is from in the citation details and a webpage link to the specific person’s burial info.

How would I structure this source, and can I have something like a dropdown list in the citation details to select the council from rather than retype each one?

There isn’t a dropdown list option in source templates.

I would use the source template “Website (with multiple databases)”. It depends on how far you want to break it down and not write the same info. I have a database of cemeteries in a specific county. It is broken down by the cemetery name and city. Then I only need to fill out the citation for the person using that master source.

Thanks for the info! I had a feeling that was the case.

Can you explain further how you use your database? I’m trying to collate the available cemeteries, but it’s a big job.

Cheers!

I only recorded everyone in the cemetery if the majority of people there were related to me. Otherwise, I stayed with family surnames. I used this user submitted Template 002 EE-FindAGrave. Don’t believe I tweaked it, but it’s possible. The download link is on the Help page.
