I like to attach a scan of a source to the citation for that source. When adding a new source citation, there is a section that is entitled “Citation Detail text, media etc”, but the only entries that I see are for “Research Note,” “Detail Comment,” and “Detail Ref#.” No media. I am having to save the citation then return to it to add the media.
What am I missing? There must be a way to add media when creating the citation.
Working as programmed. You are trying to attach an existing object (the media) to a nonexistent object (citation that you haven’t yet finished creating). Once you have finished creation of the citation, then you have a place to attach the media.
I would argue that it’s broken as designed rather than working as programmed. In other words, it’s a bad design. Namely, you cannot add media from the Add Person screen.
Instead, you go ahead and click Ok in the Add Citation window without adding the media. Then you go to the Edit Citation screen and then you can add the media.
The way I choose to deal with this situation is to pretty much say Ok to the Add Citation screen without entering any data at all. Then I go to Edit Citation for the newly added citation where I do my real work.
The reason I suggest that it’s bad design is that the Add Citation screen is the screen that’s big enough to do your work of entering citation data but it doesn’t have all the needed fields. And the Edit Person screen has all the needed fields but it’s crammed into too little space which makes it hard do your work of entering citation data. I would prefer that both problems be fixed. Namely, all relevant citation fields should be available in Add Citation, and it should be possible to run Edit Citation in a screen that looks just like Add Citation so there is enough space to work.
I agree with you. When creating a citation, I want to be able to include all relevant information at one time. At a minimum, the citation creation screen should not include the reference to media, which is what threw me off.
I will give a try to your idea of just creating an almost blank citation record and then filling it in from the edit screen. A little awkward, but I think it could work if I got in the habit.
You simply have to create and save the citation before you can add media and web links to it. It is because of the way it works in the database to allow you to have more than one media file and multiple web links for a citation and to use the same media for different citations.
The link between citation and media is held in a different table to the citation so has to have the id number of the citation before it can be created and that id is only generated when the citation is saved. Same for web url - they need the citation id to link them.
Back in the old versions you could only have one media and one web tag and it was changed to allow more. No going back.
