RM 10 installed on 2025 Dell Windows 11 Inspiron 15 laptop with external read write Cd?DVD. I have made sharable CDs before with older DelWin computer, but have trouble with new system. Click on Publish, click on Shareable Drive and the only option in the list is: Nonremovable Drive OS:(C:). Tried to do a backup to the D : CD/DVD read writer and get a message “may take a while” and then almost immediately is a RM window that says, “Backup was not created.” What to try? I have tried blank CD 700MB, blank DVD 4.7GB. My data base and media file is small, do not know exact size nor do I know how to find this. Tried USB 2.0 and USB 3.2. If I go to file Explorer, yes there is a D drive. Online RM help seems to say save the file to USB external drive and then copy. From the opening “fam tree” format screen, tried to do a file save to D or USB and was unsuccessful. Forget the exact click details. When RM 6 and 7 was the current version, I made several of these read only CDs, but not now! Thanks ahead of time for your thoughts–much appreciated. Ted in NH
Correct, its a Shareable Drive and not a Shareable CD anymore. It can be saved to an external hard drive or USB drive. Once it has been created it in either location you can copy and burn the files onto a CD if you wish. If you are trying to send these CDs to family members you might find the majority of them no longer have CD/DVD on their computers. It’s best to purchase small USB drives for sharing.
HI Renee,
Thanks for your clarification. My apologies for another question, same topic. I went to Reports, and Share to put the RM data base and media files on the ScanDisk thrmb drive. All went well. Can open the USB drive and click thru the tree and media is connected. Will probably use that going forward, but some in family have DVD connected to computer , so tried to move the RM info from USB thumb drive to the RW DVD Dell device. When I opened the E drive (USB thumb drive) found three dots, clicked on them and one of the menu choices was “burn to DVD”. I selected 2 files, Roots Magic 10 and Launch RM10 windows.bat files, and did the burn. When I accessed the RW DVD in Windows Explorer, the good news is that there is a RM 10 file and a Launch RM10 file. Clicked on Launch RM10 and message: “Windows can’t find RM10.exe, make sure you have name correct.” Essentially a black screen and this message is all I get. If I click on the other file, Roots Magic 10, I get a list of subfiles.
Although easy path is to get modern and use only USB thumb drive at $10 each and forget about DVds, I would like to know the solution to this problem. If you know some things I should try, much appreciated.
Tangential question: Do you know how to save a RM database and media files so that they can be revived say in 50 years? The objective would be to save in such a way that the next generation can be disinterested in genealogy , but the generation after that can benefit from today’s database. The digital files may survive 50 years, but the technology to “open” those files is probably going to be much different and not work on old files. Some kind of a comprehensive printed report would work, if that capability is available now.
REgards,
Ted
I don’t have access to a CD/DVD drive and burning software anymore so I can’t give any helpful advice on the Shareable Drive. I think switching to USB drives is a better option.
It’s really hard to say what technology will be available in 50 years. If I had to pick something it would be to share online. The Ancestry member trees will remain available even after your membership is gone.
FamilySearch is another option but you would need to manually upload your media. The issue there is it’s a collaborative tree. FamilySearch is working on its own version of member trees. Right now they call it CET trees. I don’t have any details other than what was mentioned during RootsTech. Google it and watch the progress on it. FamilySearch has been around for 130 years and know how to migrate data to preserve it.
Presuming You mean a FOLDER named Rootsmagic-10 and the FILE named Launch RootsMagic 10 (Windows).bat … the .BAT file only contains one line inside:
START "" ".\RootsMagic-10\RootsMagic.exe"
You mention the “list of subfiles”. One of them should be RootsMagic.exe (the highlighted filename listed in bold immediately above that is being “called” by the batch file). It may not have the .exe filename extension visible (depending upon your File Explorer settings). That filename is the RM10 program executable (runs RootsMagic program to get her going). SO, you should ALSO be able to use Windows File Explorer to navigate to those “subfiles” and merely double-click upon the subfile whose name is RootsMagic …launching RM10 to begin opening.
BTW… the .\ in Windows means CURRENT DIRECTORY (the folder where that .BAT file resides).
