New Member - Hello!

I am new to this community. I am currently using the trial version of RM on macOS. I have experience with Ancestry and Reunion. I have modestly large databases in both cases, developed sporadically over a few decades. My interests looking ahead are to cull both databases from cruft and to merge the two databases in their developments. In regard to the latter interest, I will eventually be looking at the advantages that RM should bring to link to my database in Ancestry. In the short-term evaluation period, and especially with regard to the first interest, I am exploring whether RM may provide any distinct advantages to give a less overwhelming, lower friction approach to input data compared to Reunion.

I joined this community now in my trial version for two reasons. One is to post questions, perhaps as help or as feature requests. The second is to respond to questions and comments, perhaps if only to see whether my insights make sense even without having access to the full version.

Welcome, DrJJWMac !!!

Welcome! It’s a very nice community here, so I’m sure you’ll find the help that you need. Also, good luck with RM. I have been using it for several years now and really like it, but only used Family Tree Maker previously so I can’t compare it to Reunion.

The RM Essential (free verison) will let you download the Ancestry tree with the media. If you haven’t done so, start with that.

Good to know. I will however hold off for the moment on linking to Ancestry. I need to do serious housecleaning work. I may try to prune off a section of the Ancestry tree for a test later. My main interest now is exploring the features in a local database.

Welcome DrJJWMac,

As background, I have some experience with Ancestry and currently have Reunion 14 and RootsMagic 11.1.2 for Mac on my MacBook Pro. My RootsMagic tree was initially sourced from Reunion and it involved some tidy up in RootsMagic, since Reunion tends to just use sources with the citation being a link to the source with a single citation detail field, as opposed to storing detail within a citation itself.
The reason I switched (or started to use) RootsMagic is Reunion has poor recording of citation quality and rather, allows only quality to be recorded at a source level. I am using RM Source, Information, Evidence to record quality at a citation level, something that is not possible (or more correctly, difficult) with a single citation detail field. In addition, Reunion does not have treeshare capability. All of which you already know.
Happy to help if any way I can.

That said, this community is very active and extremely helpful with a lot of experience with the RM product and Ancestry.

Thanks. Interesting … I am also working on a MacBook Pro. I won’t say that I am necessarily so deep into Reunion to recognize where certain details about certain information should be stored and why it should matter. Tree sharing is also less of an interest now, albeit being locked-in to macOS under Reunion will bother me should I ever want to share my extensive genealogy efforts with family members who are using Windows systems. Finally, I certainly appreciate the more modern Discourse forum. To be clear overall though, what lures me to RM right now is the potential for a less cluttered approach in the UI.
