Missing information in family view

I’m afraid I already know that the answer to this is “You can’t,” but if I don’t ask I won’t know.

Trying RM10 after reverting to RM7 because of RM8’s terrible user interface, the first thing I noticed is the lack of information in Family View. In RM7 you could see the full birth date and place, along with if a child was biological, step, or adopted. For example, in one family the children are “Adopted,” “birth”, and “step-birth.” (Not to mention the multiple-spouse indication that I’ve seen brought up elsewhere.)

In RM10 I just have a list of kids, only the year on the dates, no locations, and no indication of who’s biological and who isn’t.

Is there any setting to change this, or is this one of the many losses we’re just told to accept?

Thanks.

This is probably my #1 complaint about RM10. I have asked for a feature to have the RM7 version of Family View available in RM10. It would need to be an option because the RM10 version includes a spouse for each child and some users prefer the RM10 version. I have no idea of this feature will ever appear in RM10 or its successors. Here is what the feature needs to do.

  • The feature should be able to be turned on and off with a check box directly in Family View, the same way you can change the number of generations directly in the view with Pedigree View and Descendant View. The feature should not be hidden away in some hard to find place.
  • Show the list of children in a square grid with the squares all adjacent to show as many children as possible. It should show as many children on the screen at the same time as did the RM7 version.
  • Show full birth dates (not just birth years), birth places, death dates (not just years), and death places for each child.
  • The feature to Rearrange Children should be available directly on the view like it is in RM7, without needing to use the Rearrange Children tool that is available in the sidebar in RM10 (and which is well hidden in the sidebar in RM10).
  • The number of spouses and the ability to switch to a different spouse should be available for the parents directly in the view like it is in RM7, without needing to use the tool for the spouses in the sidebar (and which is well hidden in the sidebar).

I may be forgetting something, but that’s the gist of it. Well, for all the views, I would like a feature to have the RM7 version of the info panel back again. It’s the big white panel in RM7 at the top center of the screen that has so much information available about the highlighted person that’s so much harder to see in the side panel in RM10.

You make it sound like these bits are not available or somehow difficult to quickly display/determine. Not true.

That was not my message, but I will respond.

Those bits are certainly available. But I do think they are difficult to quickly display. Indeed, how do you quickly display a list of all the children, all the children’s full birth dates, all the children’s birth places, all the children’s death dates, and all the children’s death places?

Well, you can’t see them in Family View. You can’t see them in Pedigree View. You can’t see them on a family basis in People List View. You can’t see them anywhere in the sidebar. Where you can see them is in Descendant View set to two generations. For that reason, my workaround for RM10 is to make very heavy use of Descendant View set to two generations. So I do that a high percentage of the time in RM10 and I seldom use Family View in RM10.

However, my workaround has problems of its own. For example, it doesn’t show the grandparents that you can see in Family View. For another example, it doesn’t show the icons for WebHints, Problem Alerts, and FamilySearch links that you can see in Family View.

Is there another way that I’m missing to quickly display those bits?

A couple clicks from any of those tabs provides the info. Not difficult and measured in time, very brief. (eg. double-click a sibling and checkmark Show relative events). It may only show those events during the sibling lifetime, but there are numerous other clicks to quicky peruse the same info in a short time (in UI interaction time).

Here is what I am talking about with RM7.

Is this what you are talking about with RM10? I double clicked on a sibling and turned on Show relative events.

Since I run both in parallel virtually all day almost everyday and visit this forum similarly, I obviously am aware of the difference between the interfaces.

I’ve just never understood the difficulty claimed by those changes. The RM10 tab for Descendants view can show up to 7 generations of most of that type info (minus step/foster/etc.)

What’s the real penalty? Keyboard navigation? That was definitely hurt somewhat. Double-clicking anyone, in most panes, is instantaneously informative and dismissable just as quickly.

The workaround also doesn’t show their birth status, which was one of the things I first noticed was missing.

“A couple of clicks” here, “numerous other clicks” there, it all adds up and is hardly “quickly” compared to just having it all there with no extra clicks.

For each individual, the pane in the upper left corner has a header named Parents: X
If the number (X) is greater than 1, there are more relationships in addition to birth parents.
