Hi - I have a large collection of photos which I would like to catalogue in some form. I have tried using Clooz and plain old Excel, but, whatever the pros and cons of either solution, I am basically just duplicating the information I already have in RM. And I don’t like making extra work for myself, believe me.
In the RM media entry form I enter information as follows:-
Caption: The name of the person or subject of the photograph.
Description: The source of the photograph plus any other relevant information pertaining to it.
Date: The date the photograph was taken if known, or an estimate. Sometimes I leave it blank (not important as this field presently doesn’t carry over to any reports - I can put this info in the Description field in any case but it’s nice to see it on-screen).
Ref#: Here I put my personal file no for the photo. Again it doesn’t carry over to any reports but, again, it’s nice to have it on-screen.
On the Tags screen I can enter the people and places featured in the photo, again with any relevant information, such as who identified the person or place, and for group photos, the placement of that person in the photo.
So far all good.
The only problem is when I come to print the information, which I can do by selecting the photo in the Multimedia tab and then using the More options (three dots) menu. I make one change to the default options which is to put my reference number in the Title field (I have to remember to do this each time but it’s not a great faff). The problem is in the output, with the Caption being squeezed over to the right and, more often than not, being truncated.
So could I request that this minor formatting bug be fixed at some point. It’s not a major problem in the great scheme of things but hopefully it’s minor enough to be a ‘quick’ fix.
Thank you
Danny
Edit - another ‘anomaly’ I have discovered since writing this post is that any text formatting in the Description field prints as plain text with html tags encasing the text. This is the same in the Scrapbook report.
Further edit - On further investigation, new lines or new paragraphs in the Description field do not show in the printed report, ditto the Scrapbook report.
Further further edit - I have discovered that the Caption and Description fields are amalgamated into the actual image which explains the above anomalies (you can see this for yourselves if you export the report as a Word doc.). I’d like to ask the developers why this is?
Description will wrap a sentence but not include anything after a carriage return. There are field limitation based on if you are using Print Media or the Scrapbook. If you need multiple rows its best to add it to the media tag comments field, which is included on Print Media.
Thank you, but I’m afraid the caption field doesn’t wrap. The field aligns to the right and is truncated when it gets to the end. Please see the screenshot below. The full text (which is all on one line) should read “Alan George Bull and Pamela Joyce Chatham on their wedding day, 30 April 1966, St Peter’s Church, Eaglehawk, Victoria, Australia.” Please also note the html tags that appear in the description field when the text they surround should just be ‘bolded’. And while I know the description field will display in full if I don’t included line breaks, it doesn’t make for great ‘readibility.’
No, the caption isn’t meant to be that long. Issue with the caption not being centered justified but starting from the center has been reported to development. The support of HTML coding has not been added. That is why they appear. The request for support has been reported to development.
This is true and undesireable. It needs fixing in the preview. However, if one prints the media using the Scrapbook option, instead, the Caption is depicted correctly left-justified, though still limited to a single line, less than 60 characters (at default styles for font/size).
Thank you. Just to clarify, I am not putting in the html tags but using the formatting tools provided.
Just a quick line to say thank you for taking the time to look at this and concurring with what I have found. I will continue to use the RM media tools to catalogue my photo collection as I have been doing, and while the output might not be exactly as I would wish for (or think should actually be ), the data is actually there in one place (one program) and I don’t have to juggle (if you get my meaning). Who knows, maybe I should get to grips with SQL
