Feature Request - Thesaurus for Managing Historic Place Names

Historical place names are important, especially if one wants to write up the social history of the times. For example, with Noord Brabant, Nederland, both the province and the nation state change about 12 times from 900 AD onwards. Ideally, RM would provide a ‘thesaurus’ which showed equivalencies. I appreciate that this would be slightly complex boolean construct because it would have to be associated with the relevant dates.

On the other hand, RootsMagic10 objects when I include ‘Australia’ as a place name before 1 Jan 1901, or England before about 1300, or the state of Victoria before 1901 (Colony of Victoria), or Scotland before …, or Wessex before … etc. So RootsMagic10 clearly has a way of managing historical place names by date … but does it only for USA, Canada, UK and Australia.

We’ve had this request before and a library of historical world place names is extremely complicated. It’s hard to get people to agree on dates when countries existed, much else counties or provinces. RootsMagic would need a library already containing this. It is not something we would build on our own.

Thanks. However, since this capability apparently exists for nation states and provinces for UK, US, Canada and Australia, can a user ‘thesaurus’ capability be made available for users to establish their own historical world place name ‘library’.

Once you enter a place in the place list you can always reference it. In the note field add historical information with dates and name changes.

Thanks. Will try this approach.
