Census search task

In RM 10 (UK) I wish to search (and thus obtain a list) of all the people who were in ‘exampletown’ for the 1911 UK census. I had some success with a two-rule search. 1. Census date contains “1911” and 2. Unselect Census Place does not contain ‘exampletown’. This gave 41 results because it turns out that this only finds people who were in exampletown for all the census occasions during their lives. If a person happened to be in exampletown for most censuses but was in ‘awayville’ for even just one census, then they do not appear in the search results.

My second attempt had one rule and yielded 136 results which I feel is better. Select Census date contains “exampletown” AND census date contains “1911”.

I would be grateful if someone on here can tell me if I have cracked this task [i.e. Will I have found everyone I need?] and, if not, where I might be going wrong. Is there a more elegant solution?

There isn’t a more elegant solution in RM10. That is why RM11 added search enhancements. Watch the video to determine if it’s time to upgrade.

Better Search in RootsMagic 11 (Search Enhancements)

prior to RM11 there are not really any ways to do decent Census search especially if using shared facts. There are Sqlite options for prior to RM 11 . (using excel and PBI)

It would be worthwhile to upgrade to RM11 for the advanced search features & capabilites

I will take a raincheck on that having only recently upgraded to V10. Thank you for the replies.

so if not ready to upgrade your only real option is outside tools such as available is sqlite

Try the Who Was There List. Enter the location & date.

You can use the results to make a group after that. They will have to be added to group individually since the report has no option to make a group.
