My files are mostly created on my Imac Intel desktop. When traveling I use my Silicon based Apple laptop. When 1st accessing my files on the laptop, I always got an error message “error opening file” and at times ", but many times the file was there in the background and accessible after minimizing/closing the caution(s). Lately, nothing! No file in the background to open. Is there a possibility the two types of systems aren’t compatible? I can still access the file(s) on my desktop after rejection by laptop. I’m operating rm9. I have removed and reinstalled the rm9 program on the laptop, to no avail!

Tom H: The database file is the same except for differences in table indexes based on the RM proprietary, secret RMNOCASE collation sequence embedded in the application. Either it is different source code between Windows and Apple OS or the development compiles the same source code differently. Regardless, one always has to Rebuild Indexes or Compact Database on receiving a database file from the different OS.
The settings to remember which file to open with is stored on the computer itself and not in the database. Does it work correctly after you’ve opened the database on the computer once? Make sure to use the red Close button instead of Cmd+Q or Quit RootsMagic right now.
I can open files but, cannot close them. I get an error code informing that " SQLite - database disk image malformed". I have to accept that notice as reason I cannot close the program other than using the FORCE QUIT option but, on subsequent attempts it and others open. ? One would assume that If the file(s) are “malformed” it wouldn’t be able to open any of them! ?? Trying to work the issue on my laptop as well results In like frustration.
You don’t want to ignore the message “SQLite - database disk image malformed”. It truly means there is an issue with your database. Make sure the database is not inside of any folder syncing with the cloud like Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive. Run the database tools under File, Tools.
Hi rzamor1
I did utilize the tools listed in the file section. All came out ok! Having exhausted all avenues of repair, I was toying with the idea of exporting the data via Gedcom to a usb drive and importing it back in as a - new file. I’ve already deleted and reinstalled the software and that effort didn’t resolve the problem. So, having no more options, I think I’ll try that approach. Oh, thanks for your interest!
A GEDCOM export would help clean the file.
Hello rzamor1. I’m happy to report that exporting the file data out to usb drive and importing it back into a newly created file solved the problem. I am now able to work the file at will! I thought I would pass this finding along to you and the community at large, if anyone experiences the same problem. thanks for your your interest and suggestions.
I expect your problem has nothing to do with Apple Silicon and Intel and more to do with iCloud. I see that same issue when moving between two Apple Silicon Macs. For whatever reason iCloud doesn’t always sense the SQLite updates and so the copy you pull down to the laptop doesn’t always match. You can force the sync, but my solution is always use my laptop for RM and use screen sharing when I’m on my desktop. That way I can grab my laptop and head to the porch to do some work at any time and not worry about sync issues.
A few other things to be aware of. There’s a file (actually another db) that’s in the {username}/RootsMagic/AMT directory for TreeShare that would also need to be moved if you push changes to Ancestry. And as Renee says the settings files that tell RM where all your directories are in {username}/RootsMagic/Version 9/RootsMagicUser.xml and those should be set up the same on both or you may have issues with backups and media.
Thanks for dispelling the silicon/intel guess. When one is looking for answers, anything is fair game isn’t it? Until of course it can be dispelled. Also, I’ll certainly have to reread your 2nd paragraph to understand it as you do. Thanks again for your info and time .
