Hello,
- I am an aerospace engineer/programmer. I have been dabbling in recording my family’s history on-and-off my whole life. Typically short intense research periods followed by long gaps in-between, as family, career, and life permitted.
- My research has revealed multiple Germanic, Irish and Scottish immigrant lines spanning from the late 18th century and across all of the 19th century. A few of these lines tracked back into 15th century Europe, although most lines are research dead-ends at the waters edge. DNA indicates there is also notable Scandinavian, all of the British-Irish Isles.
- I’ve used genealogy software for many decades starting with PAF/DOS, a long time amateurishly with FTM. I eventually realized the importance of citing sources, got serious and switched to TMG. Upon its demise I chose RM for several reasons:
- Its unencrypted SQLite database allowing me to develop my own s/w tools to customize for features not in RM10.
- Its great online user community support.
- Its overall set of features.
- To support small software businesses.
I’ve mostly migrated to Linux, RM being one of a very few Windows apps that I use that does not support Linux. I have not found a Linux-alternative genealogy app to my liking compared to RM. For my genealogy research I use an older multi-monitor Ubuntu PC workstation with a VirtualBox Windows 10 guest, which is where I installed RM10.
