New to RootsMagic as of summer 2021. I have more or less inherited my mother’s 40 year genealogy research project. I have been trying to digitize the voluminous family records she collected to make them available to all our family. I have tons of computer experience as my career started in the infancy of computers. She made a lot of silly mistakes in entering data that I am slowly trying to correct. Probably because she didn’t really understand how databases work.
Long time Family Tree Maker user because that’s what my mother used. But it screwed up my primary database with their monkeying with it on every program update so now it can only be read by the FTM17 original version and won’t connect with Ancestry.com. Plus it encrypts the database which makes it no longer transferable. And their support is terrible. All in all they use extremely bad programming practices. My Ancestry.com file is the closest to the working FTM file I have so I am using that as the transfer basis.
So I am in the laborious process of cleaning up the Ancestry file and used RootsMagic to pull it into the program. Reasons for choosing RootsMagic are the coordination with Ancestry and the availability of a free version which will make sharing the database with family so much easier. Please keep that option forever as having to buy a program just to look at our file was an impediment to many family members.
