What do you link to

What do you link your citations to. In a birth fact obviously the childs birth fact. I have also heard the mothers primary name, Ive heard no, only the birth fact. Same for cenus, etc.. unclear on exactly what should gEt linked

To me, it really depends on the source and the situation.

I started out linking every source I had as a citation to every little bit of information I could tease out of that source. So Indeed I would attach a birth record for a child to the mother as evidence of the mother’s name. But that approach sometimes lead me to having gazillions of citations for the same fact. So if the child’s birth certificate is the only evidence I have for the mother’s name, I will cite the birth certificate to the mother. But if I have other and sometimes better evidence for the mother’s name, I may use that instead. I don’t mind having more than one citation for a fact. But I think ten or fifteen citations for a source can be ridiculous.

I think often times (and some sites seem to encourage this) it to attach a source/citation to multiple events – sometimes that is accurate but can get crazy at times. A death certificate can support a DOB but how reliable might depend on many things including time period and who gave the info appearing on death record - that is just one example

If the death certificate DOB is the same as the birth certificate DOB, then there would be no need to cite the DC to the Birth Fact. However, if the DC gives a different DOB, then I might attach the DC to an Alternate Birth Fact.

I link if there is different info ie: different dates, names, etc.

Grandpa’s death certificate had mother’s maiden wrong but I did not know until I got his siblings’ certificates and they all had the same correct maiden name. Each citation were linked to her.
