Question to people who use GedSite to create website from Rootsmagic GEDCOM.
In RootsMagic Media for a person I sort images in a specific order. However on a website images are in different order, sometimes completely opposite order in RootsMagic.
Is it possible to have on website the same order of images as in RootsMagic by adding some information in RootsMagic or creating some code (or whatever) in GedSite?
This is probably a question more for the GedSite forums than for RM. But in the spirit of answering the question in terms of “how to use RootsMagic”, I enter my media into RM in reverse order so that they will appear in the order I wish in Web pages created by GedSite.
The reason the order is reversed in GedSIte as compared to RM is that I use an HTML level “float right” option in GedSIte for my images. That causes the browser to place the images at the right side of the Web page, which is what I want. But it also causes the browser to drop the images into the Web page right to left, which is the cause of them appearing in the reverse order between RM and GedSite. I don’t know if there is a way to have images on Web pages created by GedSite not float. I’m pretty sure that if they float left on Web pages created that they will be in the same order both places. But I like the float right. There is an example below of what such Web pages look like.
I’m very sensitive to this being an RM forum. But about 99% of the time I spend “working on GedSite” is actually spent working in RM. And these days, probably half of the overall time I spend working in RM is spent prepping data for sending the data to GedSite. In that sense, it’s not much different than spending time in RM prepping data to be sent to Ancestry or to Family Search or to myrootsmagic.com It’s a very valuable use of RM.
Finally, RM supports reordering media without needing to delete it and reenter it. But its not done from the lists of media items in the Edit Person screen such as facts or citations. Rather, it’s done from the Media icon at the far left of the Edit Person screen. That icon brings up all the media for the person, including person media, family media, fact media, and citation media. And that’s where you can reorder the media. I wish you could just reorder the media items in RM directly from the individual lists of media items.
As an example of getting a media file in the desired order in a Web page created by Gedsite by reversing it in RM, you can look at RM Data Displayed on Web Page Created by GedSite and scroll down to the Military Draft Registration fact. The document is two images, front and back, and I wanted the front of the document to the left of the back of the document on the Web page. So I entered them in reverse order in RM. I then sent the RM data to GedSite via GECOM. GedSite itself didn’t really reverse them. It was really the Web browser that reversed them.
Thank you, it is a good Idea to place images in RM in reverse order. Because final product is a website created by GedSite, all images there will be in correct order.
You are right. I also spending more time on RM prepearing data to show correct way on the website created by GedSite. And in the process learning about abundance of different options build into RM.
