The gedcom bloat issue occurred for me after running the duplicate citation and sources tools so not the answer.
My database is on FTM latest version but my spouse is using RM7 so I decided to back her up with a gedcom to FTM. Two old gedcoms worked fine but the current one could not be imported. This could be a FTM issue but the obvious workaround to install RM8, convert the RM7 file and try a gedcom export from RM8 would run into this bloat problem.
I did some testing (sent to tech spt) cycling a FTM gedcom to RM8 with no changes and exporting a gedcom back to FTM. Checking the media panel showed that starting with 1 media item in a folder I ended up with 4 copies of that item. The actual media folder on Finder (=windows explorer was unchanged).
Sorry if I am misunderstanding - are you asking about the media files? Those should be transferred by FTP. The Medialinks should be in the GEDCOM and transfer to TNG when you import.
Yes, I was asking here specifically due to the RM → TNG transfer reference the OP made. The TNG installation guide I received mentioned using the Media Manager, but that’s impractical with 1000’s of files, and my provider (for TNG) does an installation that makes FTP somewhat tricky to setup. I contacted the provider and got the FTP working and all is (mostly) well. Unfortunately in the process I found I had 100’s of duplicate images so I need to fix the links inside RM after deleting the dups. A rather tedious process, but if I hadn’t been going through the upload to TNG process I wouldn’t have noticed the need for cleanup.
I have over 8000 Media Items I have not noticed any issues with RM – I previously used FTM. Not sure if related to Media/Sources/Citations – when I first move from FTM to RM-- there we issues the way Ancestry/FTM did things. What is the URL to your site? This conversation might need to move off of here as it may go beyond the scope of this board. I have used TNG for over 5 years starting with version 11.
