Hello,
“It would be great to have a feature that lets you specify the number of children in a family, even if their names and dates are unknown.”

There are ways to see that but probably not the way you desire. I think you need more details on exactly what you seek for it to be considered and more important to get the result you are seeking
I created a custom family fact for this. The number goes in the description.
Like @RichardOtter, I created a custom fact, cleverly called Kids, in which I use the description field only. If I don’t know an exact number, I can also use statements such as ‘at least 3 children’ or ‘4 sons and 3 daughters’ or whatever I need. If I don’t put a specific number, then I know I still have some work to do.
Knowing the number of children a couple had, and not their names and dates, would become a research question for me. Which would then become a family task. I would also record the number of children on their marriage fact note.
Why would it be great to have? You are asking for a feature without providing any justification for it. Why should the developers put any effort into providing it. Maybe an explanation of the benefits you get from it in MyHeritage would help your case.
A special field into which one enters a number is of no advantage if it cannot be compared in RM Search to the count of child records for a couple. For example, search for persons whose number of child records is less than the ‘known number of children’. Then there is the question of the type of child-parent relationships: birth, step, adoptive, foster. Should there be options as to which to exclude?
yeah I am no understanding enough of why / how they are using it or more importantly how other would benefit from. Do they just want a count ? also a count for # of Ancestors and # of descendants would be nice… the issue with custom facts is there are a static point in time. (which sometimes is desired).
I’m reading this request as one of two possibilities
something like this – there are many GEDCOM tools statistics that do versions of that.
I do not see RM doing a version of that.
To view the exact breakdown of known children in your MyHeritage family tree, you can access the built-in analytics dashboard:
Log in to your MyHeritage account.
Navigate to the Home dropdown menu on the main navigation bar.
Select Family Statistics.
Click on the Children tab.
This section provides interactive charts and metrics detailing:
Number of children per family across your approximately 32,000 records.
Families with the most children and individuals with the highest count of offspring.
Ages when having children, oldest/youngest parents, and age gaps.
@kevync1985 I really don’t think that @jan was talking abt the statistics BUT rather having a feature that shows the known number of kids..
My heritage has a fact Known kids that can be added to anyone-- in My Heritage the facts are on the left side while your tree is on the right side of the page–so the fact is right there in your face so to speak..
So why would I want this type of fact-- well in the US-- If answered, the 1900 and 1910 census both include the number of kids born/ number of kids alive to a mother-- sometimes these are correct–sometimes they are wrong such as more kids born or even more alive then listed–sometimes such as with my 2nd g-grandma, it says there were a lot more kids born than I’ve found -----part of the reasons for more kids born is because we are missing the 1890 census, so they could have been born after June 1 1880 up to abt 1886, and by 1900 they are out working for neighbors, married ( and even died in childbirth) or they could have died-- it also could be that the mother ( or father) had a 1st spouse that you know nothing abt and the kids could be living with relatives, the mother could have had 1 or more kids out of wedlock-- this problem is not necessarily restricted to the 1880 -1900 timeframe-- if you can only find your ancestor in 1860 and 1880, you could have a lot of kids you know nothing abt – these are all scenarios where I have found additional kids that I knew nothing abt-- while my databases are small , I have a lot of them ( his, mine and theirs/friends)---- I can typically remember the ones I have more kids than found on some BUT NOT all of my databases-- BUT I DEFINITELY probably would NOT be able to remember in a very large database like some of you have…
So why NOT just try to solve it then and there if I found 2nd g-grandma had more kids than what I knew abt?-- Well it’s 2 am on Monday morning and I need to be at work at 9 am or Life gets in the way of having fun and spending hours digging up info-- Since money doesn’t grow on trees and I’m NOT rich ( and I like eating), I can’t afford to fly to England or go to New York/ California/ Canada etc to dig thru courthouse records or pay someone bookoo amounts of money to do it for me–sometimes even when you do pay for it, they can’t find the birth or death records—so I may have to wait for other records to show up on the major sites or other newspapers to be added to those sites…
The suggestion of making a customized fact, a family task, recording the # of kids on a marriage fact note or even making a group and /or color coding are great ideas BUT are all basically buried ( including color coding if you have used other colors)–not something you see when you are on the person’s main page…
That said RM use to have something similar that was in your face in RM 8- RM10 ( it was in RM 7 BUT that was buried) BUT RM 11 does NOT…
RM 8-RM10 tells you how many kids by each spouse BUT it is based on # of kids you listed…
So what is the difference if you create such a fact or Rootsmagic automatically gives you that fact. Pretty much the same functionality either way.
The request to see the count for children on the sidbar has been reported to development. The count for children does show in the Family View.
That count lists children attached to the family already, which isn’t the full point of this thread. It would seem to be a request for a way of noting the count of children when you don’t know their names. For example, the census states a woman is the mother of 7, but you only know and have attached 2 but you still want to note that there are 5 more children to find.
No, a Task is not adequate for noting this as it is not clear from from looking at the mother’s edit screen that she has any more than the two attached kids.
I guess I don’t really understand the request. People have always just added space holding children in these cases.
Sounds complicated.
Children by all circumstances or only parent/child births? And for both parent’s previous and follow on Spouses? How to differentiate whether blood-related and to whom. Wouldn’t it need something along the same lines as each Fact has with the Proof feature? How can it be made portable to other programs and online services?
