Well, I finally got RootsMagic 11 downloaded, but can not get it to stay connected to Ancestry through TreeShare. I have gone through the process of downloading my tree through Ancestry 3 times now. Even chatted with RootsMagic, who thought doing it again would somehow magically fix the problem. I download the database, even put one on my Desktop, but it doesn’t matter. I can never get it to open again. A database will open in RM11 but with TreeShare, it still asks me to download the database again. When I download it, TreeShare is open and works fine, after I close it, and try to reopen, it asks me to download the database again. Help.
I checked and I have 11.5
I can guarantee you that it does NOT asked you to download every time unless you do something like disconnect the tree from Ancestry. So assuming the you start RM and your file is not already open, then you click the Home icon on the left side, the click Open File, then find and chose your most recent file which should open…then what do you do? You need to give very explicit steps. You original post is very general and tells us nothing. There is nothing the to work with.
It almost sounds like you keep opening an old file that is not connected, instead of the file you just downloaded.
It’s very possible that I am opening an old file that is not connected, but it is unclear how to get the correct file open. I was told by RootsMagic to put it in a completely different folder. Not quite sure how that’s done, I downloaded the Ancestry file this last time to my desktop. I tried opening from there, but it is a blank white page on the desk top with the name that I gave it. It does not open a database in RM11.
There is a folder, from this last time, on my desktop, but it is only the media file. It may be something I’m doing as I have no ability to recall things I’ve just done. (Long story). I did just what you said, Start RM, click open file, have to browse for it, in Documents for the old unconnected one and looked on my desktop for the new one, but like I said all I got was a blank white page with the new name I gave it. It does not open a database. BTW, the blank white page does not show up in the list when I browse my desktop. I can only try to open it directly from the desktop.
Does anyone think I should try deleting the one database I have? I have multiple backups, but I use Ancestry as my main tree with RootsMagic being my backup.
To be clear, You cannot open a RootsMagic database from OUTSIDE the program. Anything and everything that DOES NOT show up when You BROWSE your desktop (from WITHIN the RootsMagic program) IS NOT a database created by RootsMagic. It only seeks and lists databases ending in file extensions .RMTREE and .RMGC
If that’s the case then I am not downloading anything from Ancestry. I downloaded to my desktop this last time, and there is nothing there.
I would really suggest seeing if support can remotely assist you. It is apparent that this is a complicated process for you and I really don’t know that it can be explained simply enough in text.
You need to do one of two things, restore a backup or create a new, and blank file then run TreeShare to pull down your data (which may take some time depending on how big the Ancestry Tree is.
Even better might be if you have a local genealogy society, or an LDS FamilyHistory Center or something like that so they can walk you through the process.
This description sounds “off” to me. You shouldn’t have to close it and then try to reopen. Perhaps reading the online help file info (press F1 function key while in the program) about TreeShare here will help in understanding what might be your hitch.
So download your Ancestry tree again and DON’T close the File or RM.
Make sure you have something in Settings>Folder Settings so it downloads in a specific location.
Can you give us a screen shot of when it asks to download the tree again? I’m wondering if what you are actually seeing is the “Collecting changes from Ancestry” message.
I do agree though that it maybe best to do a remote with a support agent. The chat button is in the lower right corner of the website. Best time to reach a support agent is Mon-Fri 8:00-4:00 (MDT)
I can see this much of the pathname: Backup C\SG-Mitchell Family Tree - Created 4.7.rmtree. What is the rest of it?
Maybe Kfunk was on to something…
“unless you do something like disconnect the tree from Ancestry.”
It is quite possible that I may have disconnected this tree from Ancestry. He has a post saying one could reconnect by opening a backup. Will try that.
I was able to restore a backup from October. The August 2026 ones would not open. I can now get into TreeShare, even after closing it.
